Assistant Professor in Computational Linguistics
Department of Language Studies, University of Toronto Mississauga

The Department of Language Studies, University of Toronto Mississauga, invites applications for a tenure-stream appointment in Computational Linguistics at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position start date is July 1st, 2018.

Qualified candidates must have earned a PhD in Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, Computer Science (with a clear specialization in language applications), or a related field by the date of appointment or shortly thereafter. Applicants must have formal education in both Computer Science and Linguistics with research interests in models of language that connect computational linguistics and theoretical approaches to human language (NLP, computational modeling of language production or processing, speech recognition and synthesis, machine learning, etc.). S/he must be committed to a career combining teaching and research in Computational Linguistics, and in interacting with colleagues engaged in theoretical, experimental, and descriptive linguistics. Experience in the tech industry is an asset. Duties will include teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels in Linguistics, supervision of advanced undergraduate and graduate students, maintaining an innovative, independent, productive, externally funded research agenda, and participating in the academic life of the department.

The successful candidate must have a record of excellence in research and in teaching, and the demonstrated ability to develop a program that will prepare students for careers in industry as well as academia. Evidence of excellence in research will be demonstrated through publications in top ranked and field relevant academic journals, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements by referees. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, strong letters of reference, and the teaching dossier and teaching statement submitted as part of the application. A strong command of oral and written English is required.

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The University of Toronto Mississauga is part of the tri-campus University of Toronto system. This position forms part of an ongoing initiative by UTM to expand its research cluster in computing, providing an opportunity for the successful candidate to take a leadership role and play an integral role in developing a joint program in Computational Linguistics bridging the department of Language Studies and the Department of Mathematical and Computational Sciences.
