Call for participation, linguistic research project

Right now, we are looking for people interested in participating in a recorded online chat (1-2 hours). If your first and dominant every day language is English and you have ever been mis-identified based on your voice or language use on any social dimension -- for example, age, gender/sex, ethnicity/race, region or nationality -- we are eager to talk with you about participating in our project. We are especially interested in talking to people who self-identify in any way that would fall under umbrella terms such as non-binary, genderqueer or gender non-conforming. If you are interested, meet these language requirements but have not been mis-identified based on your voice or language, you are also welcome to contact us about participating.
Let me start by telling you a little about this project. We are working to develop a collection of voices to be used in language related research in a shared communal archive. Our current focus is on speakers whose dominant language was Canadian or American English by the age of 5 years.

To collect your voice, we will set up a day and time to have you read some stories and sentences, and then chat with you for about an hour and you will record everything on your computer, then upload the sound file to us. Your data is always treated as confidential and will be stored anonymously using participant codes. To keep things consistent across speakers, we will send you a specific microphone via Amazon. To do the recording well, you need to have a good internet connection (for Skype) and a quiet place where you will not be interrupted for approximately one hour. You will also be asked before we record to fill in a consent form and a questionnaire online. The compensation we offer is $20 in Amazon gift cards (although I'm not sure how this will work for UK residing participants -- we are just working that out) per hour for the time you spend filling in the consent form and questionnaire as well as the recorded interview. In addition, you will keep the microphone.

If this sounds like something you are eligible for and that you'd be interested in doing please let me know by email and we'll begin the process of getting you the microphone and the consent form/questionnaire. I'm currently in France (but I am a native Canadian English speaker) and I'll be the one chatting with you, so we'll have to figure out a good day/time for both of us.

Also, can you confirm that you are 18 years of age or older and that your dominant language was Canadian or American English by the time you were 5 years old.

If you are not a native Canadian or American English speaker but are interested in participating, we may be expanding our focus in the near future, so please let me know.

If you are not interested in participating, an email confirming that is greatly appreciated.

Finally, let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you in advance and I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

LeAnn
