</span><a href="http://www.ideas-idees.ca/media/media-releases/statement-federation-outcomes-investigation-june-2nd-incident"><span lang="EN-CA">the results of an investigation</span></a>
<span lang="EN-CA">into an incident that occurred on June 2 at the 2019 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences.</span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><span lang="EN-CA">The investigation’s findings are clear: a member of our scholarly community was harassed and discriminated against by another Congress participant, in violation of the standards of behaviour
that every person who registers for Congress has a duty to uphold. </span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><span lang="EN-CA">This incident involved a case of racial profiling. The Scholar who endured this mistreatment was denied what, in the words of our Code of Conduct, all Congress participants are entitled to:
“an environment free of all forms of discrimination [and] harassment.” We are profoundly sorry this happened and we extend our deepest apologies to him for the pain, disrespect, and public embarrassment that this experience has caused him.</span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><span lang="EN-CA">We are taking decisive action in light of the investigation’s findings. The individual responsible for these actions has been suspended from Congress for a minimum of three years, and must demonstrate
that he has met five conditions before he will be eligible to return. </span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><span lang="EN-CA">We are strengthening our organizational policies and practices to prevent discrimination, harassment, racial profiling, and anti-Black racism, and we are<span style="background:white"> committed
to making these issues an integral part of the program at future Congresses. We have announced a revised theme for Congress 2020:
<i>Bridging Divides: Confronting Colonialism and Anti-Black Racism, and</i></span> we are working with our members to incorporate this change into the theme’s description and programming.</span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><span lang="EN-CA" style="background:white">Thank you for your patience as we took the necessary steps to investigate the events of June 2, determine what happened, and take responsible actions based on facts.

</span><a href="http://www.idees-ideas.ca/media/communiques-presse/enonce-de-la-federation-sur-les-resultats-de-lenquete-incident-du-2-juin"><span lang="FR-CA">les résultats d’une enquête</span></a><span lang="FR-CA"> sur un incident survenu le 2 juin 2019
lors du Congrès des sciences humaines.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><span lang="FR-CA">Les constatations de cette enquête sont claires : un membre de notre communauté savante a été victime de harcèlement et de discrimination de la part d’un autre congressiste, en violation des
normes de comportement imposées à toute personne inscrite au Congrès. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><span lang="FR-CA">Cet incident relève du profilage racial. Le chercheur victime de ce mauvais traitement n’a pu bénéficier de ce à quoi tous les participants au Congrès ont droit, à savoir, selon les termes du
Code de conduite, « un environnement exempt de discrimination [et] de harcèlement ». La Fédération est profondément désolée de cet incident et adresse au chercheur ses plus sincères excuses, aussi bien pour la douleur et l’humiliation publique qu’il a subies
que pour le manque de respect dont il a été victime.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><span lang="FR-CA">Sur la base des constatations de l’enquête, la Fédération s’emploie à prendre des mesures décisives. La personne qui s’est rendue coupable des actes précités s’est vu interdire d’assister au
Congrès pendant au moins trois ans, et devra respecter cinq conditions avant d’être autorisée à y assister à nouveau.

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><span lang="FR-CA">La Fédération travaille à renforcer ses politiques et ses pratiques pour prévenir la discrimination, le harcèlement, le profilage racial et le racisme anti-Noirs. Elle<span style="background:white">
s’engage de plus à faire en sorte que ces problèmes soient abordés dans le cadre de la programmation des Congrès à venir. Après avoir rendu public le thème revu du Congrès 2020 :
<i>Bâtir des passerelles : combattre le colonialisme et le racisme anti-Noirs</i></span>, la Fédération travaille avec ses membres pour que la description de ce thème et la programmation reflètent ce changement.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
