<span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language:EN-US">We hope that your semesters are going well this Fall, despite the continued complicated circumstances of our lived realities these days. Over the last few weeks, both the President and Vice-President of ACLA
have taken part in meetings held by members of Congress and the Federation of Humanities and Social Sciences to discuss the annual conference. Unfortunately, during these meetings, a lot of pertinent questions pertaining to the status and format of the conference
(e.g. which modalities to be used for participation) continue to be largely unanswered. As such, a lot of uncertainties remain. Official Congress members likewise indicated there would be an increase in participation/membership costs for Congress in order
to purchase a virtual platform, geared to support an online format (if that is the desired format for the conference). Congress fees, on average, are already relatively higher. In light of these uncertainties, the ACLA Executive members met last week, and
through a unanimous vote, collectively made the decision to cancel the ACLA 2021 conference. We are sorry as we understand that this news will be disappointing for many of you. But please know this decision was not made lightly or unilaterally. Given our current
circumstances, instabilities and uncertainties, without any clear, definite answers, we do not feel comfortable or secure in proceeding with the organization of our annual conference.

<span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language:EN-US">This does not mean, however, that ACLA will be inactive for 2020-2021. On the contrary! In the next few weeks, your ACLA Executive Committee members will be meeting to plan some “Covid-19 Friendly” activities,
which will allow us to showcase the work of our Association and its members. <span style="mso-spacerun:yes">
</span>That said, we will keep all of you well-informed of these activities which will be taking place throughout this year.

<span lang="FR-CA" style="mso-ansi-language:FR-CA">Nous espérons que le semestre se déroule bien malgré les circonstances compliquées que nous vivons en ce moment. Au fil des dernières semaines, la présidente et le vice-président de l’ACLA ont pris part à des
réunions tenues par les membres du Congrès des sciences humaines pour parler de la conférence annuelle. Malheureusement, dans ces réunions, plusieurs questions liées à la tenue du congrès et aux modalités qui seront utilisées pour y participer sont demeurées
sans réponses. Il a également été question de hausser les frais de participation à la conférence pour assurer l’achat d’une plateforme virtuelle si la modalité en ligne est retenue. Ces frais de participation, par ailleurs, sont déjà relativement élevés. Devant
ces incertitudes, le comité exécutif s’est réuni la semaine dernière et, collectivement, a décidé d’annuler la conférence de l’ACLA pour 2021. Nous en sommes fort désolés, mais les contraintes auxquelles nous sommes exposés et le manque constant d’informations
font en sorte que nous ne sommes pas à l’aise de procéder avec l’organisation de la conférence annuelle.
