It's definitely different. Example:

A group of us went to dinner on Sunday night. Roger Shuy ordered "tuna
melt." When the plates arrived, one was announced as /chUIn at m-mElt/ --
more or less - at any rate, none of the four of us knew what the server
was saying until she had repeated it about three times.
