An English friend of mine recently mentioned "little brown
jobs"in connection with a birding expedition she'd taken in Scotland.   This
friend lives in Oxford, though for many years she
resided in the southern Maryland/Washington, D.C. area.  The context
in which she used the phrase left me with the impression that it's
current in English bird-watching circles.
