It's cited in the RHHDAS, H-O. I found the very first citation there,
from the 1893 Princeton Tiger. In Jonathon Green's THE CASSELL DICTIONARY OF
SLANG (1998), pg. 848, it says "coined at Princeton University in the 1890s."
Nobody even says "thank you" anymore...
