Never heard of this or foo-foo before growing up in Upstate NY, but is it too
much of a coincidence to suppose that oofle is related to Shakespeare's
ouphes 'elves' /u:fs/ in Merry Wives of Windsor 4.4.50, 5.5.57?   If I
remember right, elves lost /l/ somewhere along the line to give ouphes...
