Sounds like hard "g"

I was watching a PBS program yesterday on Mexican-American history. And
people kept saying the name "Jose Angel Gutierrez". And almost every time, I
thought they'd said it with a hard [g], even though it was really the
Spanish [Nx] cluster. I apologize for being so skeptical when someone
suggested a few weeks ago that Spanish [x] could be perceived as [g] by an
English-speaker. Now I'm convinced.
