Dialect Mapping

Hello to all.

Can someone guide me towards information concerning how to do dialect
mappings?   I have read an article entitled Folk Dialect Maps by Dennis R.
Preston, but I have not been unable to find another author who has written
of this topic and I would like more information.  I want to better learn how
to map the many dialects in a region.
