My wife's response, from her office in central PA:

"Fanny Farmer Cookbook has an entry in my early edition copyrighted
1968? I
think the date is right.  I would need to verify my memory with the
connection with Joy of Cooking 1968-1970 edition to make sure I am
right.

The precursor cookbook to Fanny Farmer - The Boston Cooking School
Cookbook
that my mother had from the 40's or early 50's did not have a reference
to
snickerdoodles.

It makes me think the name (snickerdoodle) is regional and was
nationalized
by putting it in a cookbook sold nationally in recent years."

My daughters love them.
