Indian summer

Apparently I'm the only one who has heard the term "Indian summer" used to
describe the warm spell in late winter/early spring which is subsequently
followed by another cold spell. And having heard it used thusly, I always
interpreted the "Indian" portion to be derogatory and connoting falseness or
deceit, such as the use in "Indian giver".
