Dana Ste.Claire of the Daytona Beach Museum of Arts
and Sciences recently (1998?) published an excellent
book (called, I think, "Cracker") which discusses the
possible origins of the term in some detail-in
addition to those already mentioned, he cites
the cracked corn that was the culinary staple of
Florida's early settlers. Not always an insult,
either-being a cracker can be a point of pride for
those few Floridians who have been here for generations.
