Names for inhabitants

Allan Walker Read has published on this topic, and about 15 years ago
wrote to me when I was in Urbana, Illinois, to ask what the locals called
themselves. I asked a number of people, and even put out a query in the
local newspaper, and got nothing. It seems that neither in Urbana nor its
upstart suburb, Champaign, do people have a name for themselves. (Read
wondered whether people used "Urbanites" or "Urbanans".) On arriving in
Tucson, I immediately encountered references to "Tucsonans". Up the road a
piece, the newspapers sometimes refer to the inhabitants as "Phoenicians",
but I doubt that this is really used by ordinary mortals.
