i can recall when i first saw K.I.S.S.: in undergraduate evaluations
of a colleague's teaching at ohio state, in 1970 or 1971.  all the
students who mentioned the phrase were from the college of education;
it was quite clear that it was something they'd learned in one or
more classes there.

this might or might not be helpful to the questing lexicographer.
it also doesn't exclude a military origin.
