On a related note, I would like to recommend my friend Yi Yuan's 1998 dissertation "Sociolinguistic dimensions of the compliment event in the southwestern Mandarin spoken in Kunming, China" (UMI #9907270). Her respondents come from a variety of backgrounds, from educated to illiterate. Her brother-in-law took her to remote villages on his motorbike in order to collect data-- I've always thought this would be a great subject for a movie! (OK, it'd be an artsy movie, not a block-buster.)
