LET THE BIG DOG EAT, a golf dictionary, sounds interesting. A fine golf
dictionary was published about eight years ago. This new one probably
doesn't have David Shulman's work on Col. Bogey.
    "Thumbs up/down" on MOA database:

PUNCHINELLO, 8 October 1870, pg. 27: "Simon says thumbs up."
CENTURY, June 1889, pg. 181: It will be thumbs down with every woman in the
room.
CATHOLIC WORLD, December 1892, pg. 361: "Thumbs up, thumbs down, wiggle,
waggle."
NEW ENGLAND MAGAZINE, May 1893, pg. 340: One was reminded of the arena and
of the controversy of thumbs up and thumbs down.
