My first inclination is to think an overcorrection - to avoid (at all costs?) def for death, etc. - as is frequently in AAVE.

Very sorry to hear about David Guralnik.

And changing the subject altogether - I was at a Greek festival yesterday in a Greek Orthodox Church.  It had saints painted on the ceiling.  One was Thomas - which was spelled with a theta.  It never occured to me that was why it's spelled Thomas rather than Tomas.  So how come it never ended up being pron'd with an initial th as in thin?
