"Joys of Yiddish" by Leo Rosten is a good, though not hard-core scholarly,
treatment. It has (as I recall) an intro with general background, plus
dictionary-style entries for many terms, and includes coverage of syntactic
patterns. It also has pronunciations that, interestingly and rather
effectively, use words and phrases that rhyme to show vowel sounds and
stress.

Sol Steinmetz also did a good book on Yiddish, but I can't recall the title.
