  Southland" but I've never heard anyone say it, either in person or
  on radio or TV.

i've never heard this in everyday speech.  in the press, yes, but only
in socal, and *maybe* on radio/tv in socal (i have dim recollections
of hearing a weather broadcast "for the southland").  but it's nothing
ordinary people would say, though many would probably understand it
correctly.

"the northland" is, i believe, uninterpretable, even in the
california southland.
