WSJ article on Jon Lighter: Allan beat me to it. It's really very sad that the HDAS is still at the letter "o." We're not talking about a lot of money to finish the HDAS and DARE. What would it cost each American--half a penny?

ZINGERS; LIVE A LITTLE BIT

PACKAGE STORE JOURNAL didn't define its name in any story. From the first issue (OED has "zinger" from only 1955?), December 1939, pg. 23, col. 1:

_PLUGS AND ZINGERS_
(...) To that little volcano who is going to town with his CARSTAIRS WHITE SEAL--yes, you guessed it--it's SI MOSKOWITZ--we concede not actual plagiarism in the use of his pet expression "Zingers," which will obviously refer to the things and people we dislike for justifiable reasons.

   From August 1940, pg. 6, col. 1:

Joe "Carstairs" Tucker...his "Live a Little Bit," has become a catch word wherever he goes.
