A fro (or froe or frow) is a woodworking tool used for splitting.  It looks
like a large knife  with a long straight blade and a rather stout cross
section.  It is introduced into the end grain of the wood to be split and
whacked with a mallet on the back of the free end of the blade, driving it
into the wood as much as necessary to split along the grain.
One of the early Foxfire books has information about the use of the froe
(in making basket splints, as I remember).
