...for a healthy young man of a certain class and region, perhaps.
More generally, a non-military job right out of high school has
always been a likely choice, for men or women, at least somewhat more
likely than the military.  Still is in this century, judging from my
son's friends (H.S. Class of '00), scattered among college, military,
and "real world" options.
