I've had an inquiry from a news reporter about the origin of
_smash-mouth football_.

I've checked The Barnhart NEW-WORDS CONCORDANCE and found evidence in
Among the New Words (Vol. 70.1).  The earliest quote there is 1989.
Nexis shows 1984.  Any earlier evidence would be greatly appreciated.
