You coulda looked it up at barnesandnoble.

James M. Cain wrote some *torrid* novels (even for today, but especially for
then). The ones made into movies were Postman (twice, the second time with
Nicholson, as I remember), Mildred Pierce (Joan Crawford's Oscar) and Double
Indemnity (Fred MacMurray, Cecil Kellaway, Edward G. Robinson and Barbara
Stanwyck).

Cain is the exemplar a certain kind of literary 'noir'. It's secular sin
being rewarded with secular hellfire.
