Birdcloth ("Casual Friday" dress)

   I've been adjudicating parking tickets all week.  If you think my decade-long struggles for etymology have been bad, it gets even worse. It's a miserable job and I always feel miserable doing it.  When working in the Bronx, I always dress down, although you have to wear a jacket and tie.
  A co-worker said:

  "What is this birdcloth?"
  After a puzzled look, he explained--
  "Cheap!  Cheap!  Cheap!"

  A quick web search turns up no relevant hits (birdcloth or bird cloth), although he says he didn't originate this.
