   When did half-anf-half mean half milk and half cream?
   From "This New York" by Lucius Beebe, NEW YORK HERALD TRIBUNE, 7 January 1939, pg. 14, col. 1:

   Lanny Ross fomented confusion at the newly redecorated Cog Rouge one night last week by commanding "'arf and 'arf" from the waiter..."Stout and bitters, sir, or black velvet?" queried the fellow..."'Arf milk, 'arf cream," countered Mr. Ross.
