flips and gasmeters

Could a flip be the coin most commonly used in flipping?  I'd guess a dime.
As for gasmeters, those of my acquaintance in England always took
shillings, which in 1941 were roughly equivalent to a quarter.  If I were a
betting person,  I'd lay my nickel on dime and quarter.
