plural of dwarf (was: dialect in novels)

Y'all might be interested, but the dwarfs-dwarves debate was used comically by Stephen Sondheim in "Into the Woods" which I think debuted in 1987.  There are two prince brothers arguing and we get:

A: It's no sicker than your thing with dwarves.
B: Dwarfs!
A: Dwarfs!
B: Dwarfs are very upsetting. . .

The difference between them is exaggerated as well.
