While in college at Texas Woman's University in the early sixties, my wife learned that a "suss" was a surprise gift from someone. She said she thought it was used by students from East Texas. I've learned it from her, and I even use it as a transitive verb. I can suss her with a surprise gift. I never heard it used as I grew up in East Texas.
