Rubber checks that bounce?

My son came back from the mailbox with a suspicious-looking envelope, and
announced that he guessed a tenant's check had "bounced."  He wants to know
why we say that.  My wife thinks it's because it "bounced" back from the
bank.  Does anybody know?
