there are several possibilities, though all of them might have more
stuff than your correspondent really wants.  john harris's English
Sound Structure uses quite a bit of dialect material, but it's almost
all british.  peter roach's English Phonetics and Phonology and gerald
knowles's Patterns of Spoken English are similarly british-oriented.
charles kreidler's The Pronunciation of English covers similar
material, but from an american point of view.

all these books are intended to be available to readers/students
with little previous background.
