TAQUITOS

Yes, it was "TACOS AND TAQUITOS." From RAMONA'S SPANISH MEXICAN COOKERY (1929), pg. 86:

   _Taquitos a la Mexicana_
1 doz. small tortillas
1/2 cup mixed onions
1/2 cup minced avocadoes
1 cup mashed, fried Mexican beans
1/2 cup green or red tomato puree
1 tblsp. minced coriander
6 split pickled chiles
Salt and pepper to taste.
Mix all ingredients except tortillas and chiles, divide in 12 equal parts, fill tortillas, add chiles, roll, fasten with toothpick and serve.

CHOPPED LIVER (1923)

I've been going through NYC Jewish newspapers, with not much new.
From the BROOKLYN JEWISH CHRONICLE, 7 December 1923, pg. 2, col. 4:

   _Entree of Chopped Liver_
One onion, one tablespoon chicken fat, any amount of chicken livers (or calves liver), three hard-boiled eggs. Bake liver in oven and put with onion and eggs through meat grinder. Season with salt and pepper and moisten with chicken fat.

(The 1931 BRONX JEWISH CHRONICLE ran ads from Gertner's Restaurant, 711 Seventh Avenue on 47th Street, "Originators of Danish Pastry"--ed.)

MRS. ASTOR'S HORSE
by Stanley Walker
Frederick A. Stokes, NY
1935

Pg. 129: One New York tearoom, which has been around a long time, has contributed the word "Gookum" to American cuisine. Described on the menu as "the ideal summer lunch for any one who likes milk and crispy nutty flavors," "Gookum" is composed of shredded wheat, grapenuts, a crumbled graham cracker, and half a popcorn ball. It is served with milk for thirty-five cents.

Pg. 130: Creamed peanuts on rice, lamb in ambush (baked chopped leftovers surrounded with split bananas), and English Monkey (shredded soda crackers, milk, cheese, and one egg cooked in a double boiler) are well liked in the suburbs, according to the gas company's Savarins.

Pg. 134: ...corned beef and cabbage ("Irish turkey").

(Walker really makes you lose your appetite this chapter--ed.)
