I go with #1.

How do you feel about "dialing" on a Touch-tone(tm) phone keypad? Are
you bothered that it isn't a round face with numbers around the rim,
like a rotary phone? Some people are; but they don't seem troubled
(AFAIK) by the fact that the rotary "dial" isn't a clock "dial", much
less a sun"dial", which maps the day (MLat. "diale", long 'a').
