It doesn't seem entirely out of the question that BRINGING UP BABY (1938?)
had a tiny bit to do with the spreading of one sense of the word GAY, which
at the time was virtually unknown even among homosexuals as a term meaning
'homosexual', into a broader cultural context--this despite considerable
evidence that even Cary Grant did not intend his famous ad-lib (which,
however, RHDAS lists as the first media use of GAY 'homosexual') to mean
anything other than 'frivolous; decadent'.
