"Postmodern"

I couldn't say anything about the initial jump, but by the time I hit college
in the late 90's, it was already cliched.  Calling something "postmodern",
even in my post modern literature class, was to look foolish and un-academic.
 It could be well used for literature-linguistics crossover jokes however:

Q. If Modern English began nearly 500 years ago, what are we speaking today?
A. Postmodern English.
