|o| Soda/pop is interesting b/c it's a lexical alternation not a |o| phonological one. Of course it's just a random thought, but I always assumed that pop did not arise in this usage until sodas were bottled and that the pop in sodapop is just an onomatopoeic word to mimic the sound of the cap being lifted or popped off. Am I wrong? rhk
