The second of the two quotes re "Big Muddy" and likely the first as well,
probably refers to the Big Muddy River, a stream which rises in Southern
Illinois north of Murphysboro and meanders through the Shawnee National
Forest before it empties into the Mississippi south of Grand Tower. The
Little Muddy River is some distance to the northeast but still in Jackson
County.
