It may be that Freud originally introduced the "anal personality" or so, which was later elaborated/specialized to (more or less synonymous) "anal retentive". I'm pretty sure both concepts were presented by Freud and others before 1930, but I can't prove it right now ... maybe the concepts were first presented in German, for that matter ...? -- Doug Wilson
