America and American

In the 1970s, when a relative was returning from Canada, to the United
States, a Canadian border checkpoint official asked of his destination.
The relative responded with the statement "America". The official
responded, "Where do you think you are now?" It seems that the border
official considered Canada to be part of America.

In recent years, as 'Made in America' has become something of a
shibboleth, more than one car sales person has told me that a vehicle
with a doorplate that indicates an origin in either Mexico or Canada is,
in fact, made in America.

Once again, the folk in the marketing department provide an example of
their inclusively.
