 I grew up in Nebraska, saying "root" because  my family did, but most of
our neighbors said "raut."

I'm assuming you mean root with the vowel of *food.*  For me it  (like
roof) also has a choice:  as either that of * food* or of *good.*  (I can
say either in both cases.)
