   The DICTIONARY OF NEW ZEALAND ENGLISH has 1916.  OED has 1929.  If you're vacationing in New Zealand for a few days and solve the national dish, they don't give you anything.

   Equal quantities of celery and apples, cut in long narrow strips.  Serve with mayonnaise dressing, and garnish with olives and celery leaves.

   LAMINGTONS.
   1/4lb butter, 2 eggs, 2 cups flour, 3/4 cup sugar, 1/2 cup milk, 1 teasppon cream of tartar, 1/2 soda.  Mode: Mix butter and sugar, add eggs well beaten, and milk, then flour and powders.  Bake in flat dish and cut in squares when cold.  To ice above: 1/2lb icing sugar, 2oz butter, 1 heaped tablespoon cocoa, vanilla flavouring.  Mix with boiling water to about consistency of treacle, dip squares into icing on the end of a skewer, and sprinkle with cocoanut or almonds.
