FWIW, I think Doug Wilson's bracketing makes good sense. In my own childhood (30s & early 40s) "funny papers" was being supplanted by "funnies" and later still began to be overtaken by "comics." For maximum impact SYFP would have had to begin life while "funny papers" was still the dominant expression, otherwise it would have seemed dated. A. Murie
