The term I know is 'souper', meaning 'a convert from Roman Catholicism to Protestantism'; such conversions, however nominal, were often achieved by the appeal of Protestant missionaries in Ireland handing out free soup, originally at the time of the great famine of 1845-7. Jonathon Green
