why "hamburger"

I had always assumed hamburger and frankfurter originated from
Hamburg and Frankfurt, Germany, although I've never know why.
Frankfurter has always made more sense to me since I associate hot
dogs with German sausages. I think Hamburger may be somehow related
since the hamburger meat was run through a sausage grinder.
