New linguistic book?

Can anyone tell me the name of a recent, specific book published for the linguistics enthusiast?  I saw a review of it in the popular press.    It contains, I recall, what might be a standard history & overview of lingistics. What caught my attention was that it contains a series of sample graduated exercises for the reader to experience first hand how languages are studied by linguists.
