CITY OF CHURCHES

The nickname for Brooklyn. The DICTIONARY OF AMERICANISMS has 1850.
"City of Churches" is in the BROOKLYN DAILY EAGLE, 15 April 1843, pg. 2.

EGG NOODLE

This is an interesting article for "macaroni," but it left me scratching
my noodle (and I'm no egghead).

8 August 1886, BROOKLYN DAILY EAGLE, pg. 11:
_MACARONI MAKING._
_Brooklyn the Scene of Its_
_Introduction in America._
(...)
A peculiar kind of macaroni is made for the Germans. By putting in plenty
of the saffron coloring the dough is made to take a deep yellowish shade and
the macaroni comes out of the press in the shape of large tubes. This is
given the name of egg noodle, and many Germans, thinking that eggs are used
in the preparation, consider this more nutritious and refuse to take any
other kind of macaroni.

(OED has no entry for "egg noodle," but two citations. There's not a single
"egg noodle" on the Making of America databases--ed.)
