The OED's first use of the term "flying saucer" is dated 6 July 1947.
Barry Popik posted a 2 July 1947 Christian Science Monitor usage. I find
the following earlier usage, said by UFOlogists to be the coinage,
reported on various web sites:

1947 _Boise Statesman_ 27 June Kenneth Arnold said today he would like to
get on one of his 1200-mile-an-hour 'flying saucers', and escape from the
furor caused by his story of mysterious aircraft flashing over southern
Washingto.

None of the sources I found gives a page number.
