LOOSE-MEAT SANDWICH

DARE has 1986. This sandwich was popularized by Roseanne, but obviously
she didn't invent it.

4 October 1962, HARLAN TRIBUNE (Harlan, Iowa), pg. 15?, col. 1:
SPECIAL
Loose Meat
Sandwich, Malt,
French Fries

(An ad for the Polar Club, of Harlan--ed.)

18 July 1972, LEMARS DAILY SENTINEL (Le Mars, Iowa), pg. 9, col. 1:
In addition to the regular fare of loose meat, hot dog sandwiches and pie,
the stand sold over 800 barbecue beef dinners Friday night and 875 chicken
dinners Saturday night. By late Saturday evening, the food stand's stores were
so depleted, the only thing left to sell was a coleslaw sandwich.

SAUSAGE SANDWICH (continued)

5 February 1885, ATCHISON GLOBE (Atchison, Kansas), pg. 3?, col. 2:
A tipsey man went into the drinking place near the theatre last night, and
bought a Weiner-wurst (sic) sandwich. The sausage he finally exchanged for a
cigar, and carefully laying the sausage down on the counter, he devoured the
cigar in connection with his two slices of bread and a dab of mustard.

(So the sausage-in-a-bun wasn't invented at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair,
when people were first given white gloves? Shocking..I'm thinking it's time
to go to sleep--ed.)
