LOSE ONE'S DOG--I've seen this a lot. I thought that I'd sent some citations
about ten years ago on this. It probably was started with the song "Oh where
oh were has my little dog gone? Oh where oh where can he be?" It's much
earlier than 1913, but just after the 1860s or so.

AWOL--I privately sent about forty "absent without leave" cites to people
from the Civil War Diaries and Letters database. It was too long for ADS-L.
There wasn't an "AWOL" there, though.

JARLSBERG--There were two more 1960s citations on the TIMES OF LONDON
database, although the earliest is a year later than the NEW YORK TIMES.

TOSTADA--I'll continue the book in another post. I thought I explained this
before. "Tostada" could be put in brackets. The important thing is to be
aware of all the earliest cites you can find.

CHILI--See the below catalog entry, from the National Agriculture Library's
AGRICOLA database Maybe I'll take a day trip there. Think it has
"jalapeno" or "chipotle"? Can Gerald Cohen inter-library loan it? I tried
to get some New Mexico stuff from NYPL offsite and hope that this was with
it, but it my request seems to have been lost.
